On Saturday, April 26, at the Spring Party for Paws, the 2013 Animal Harbor Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Sue Hartman of Winchester.

Sue moved here from Colorado when she retired from working in state government. She has four children, including a son in Huntland and a daughter in Belvidere. Sue first came to us in October of 2012, to adopt a cat. She adopted Goldie to be a companion to her first kitty, Precious.  Precious, was born in a storm drain near her home, and was the only one out of a litter of 4 that she could save. She bottle fed the kitten and by the time Animal Harbor had a space for it, she had become attached and decided to keep Precious.

When she came to adopt Goldie, she asked about volunteering. We put her right to work bathing dogs and straightening up in the office and she gradually started doing more and more until now she is working a half day, 3-4 days a week. She cleans the cat cages and cat rooms, and does a lot of extra office cleaning. Sue actually takes the place of a part time employee! She has transported pets to the vet and has helped employees when they needed a ride too. She even buys cleaning supplies and trash bags to donate. She has also fostered some puppies at home, and looks forward to doing more fostering if needed.

Sue says she just loves animals, and when she retired she decided she had to do something besides sit at home and get fat. She loves the work and lost 40 pounds after she started!  We are extremely grateful to Sue for the time and effort she has give to Animal Harbor and the dedication she has to working for the animals.

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Sue Hartman!
