Shelter sends more than 1,000 dogs and puppies aboard PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’® transport since joining the program in 2010

Animal Harbor's 1000th Rescue Waggin' pup is handed off by staff member Heather Forshee.

BELVIDERE, TENNESSEE (October 10, 2014) – Animal Harbor, operated by The Franklin County Humane Society in Belvidere, Tennessee, has sent more than 1,000 dogs and puppies aboard PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’®  transport program since joining the program in 2010.

The Rescue Waggin’ program is a national program that transports adoptable dogs and puppies from shelters in communities with significant pet populations to animal shelters where there is more adoption space and more opportunities for new homes. Currently, more than 75 animal shelters participate in the Rescue Waggin’ program.

Every few weeks, Animal Harbor selects dogs and puppies from the shelter, gives them health exams and behaviorally-assesses them to ensure the dogs transported to other communities are safe, friendly and ready for new homes. Dogs and puppies are generally adopted within a week of arriving at their new shelters, which are often located in Wisconsin and Michigan.

"It’s a lot of work every month for our staff and volunteers, but partnering with PetSmart Charities has been one of the most important life-saving steps our shelter has ever implemented,” says Amber Kelley, Shelter Manager for Animal Harbor.  “It’s comforting to know that the dogs we send on the Rescue Waggin’ vehicle will find new homes quickly.”

The next transport is scheduled to arrive at Animal Harbor on Wednesday, October 10 at 12:00 noon at the shelter’s location at 25 Walnut Grove Rd. Animal Harbor plans to send another 12 dogs and puppies aboard the Rescue Waggin’ vehicle for transport to new shelters and new homes.

Since 2004, more than 75,000 dogs and puppies have been saved through the Rescue Waggin’ program. To learn more about Rescue Waggin’ program, as well as other programs that PetSmart Charities supports and creates, visit or call 1-800-423-PETS.
