More than 500 dogs from Belvidere, Tenn., have been transported aboard PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’® vehicle since May 2010

PHOENIX, AZ, July 19, 2012 – What’s happening on Monday, July 23 at noon that has proven to save the lives of dogs in Franklin County, Tenn., for the past two years?

PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’® vehicle will stop by The Franklin County Humane Society (Animal Harbor) on July 23 at noon to pick up and transport 13 dogs for a life-saving ride to the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee. Wisc., where adoptable dogs are more in demand. The Rescue Waggin’ vehicle has been stopping by the Franklin County Humane Society (Animal Harbor) monthly since joining the program in May 2010.

Since 2010, more than 500 dogs and puppies from Animal Harbor in Belvidere have taken this life-saving ride to animal shelters in the upper Midwest where they have a much greater chance of finding permanent homes.

The reason for the program is there are too many dogs in Franklin County and not enough potential adopters. So every month, staff and volunteers from The Franklin County Humane Society (Animal Harbor) choose dogs and puppies for the trip, evaluate them behaviorally, and give them a health exam before they are officially accepted onto the program. Animal Harbor has to maintain their shelter and operations to meet the high standards set by this program, which is something not every shelter can do.

“It’s a lot of work for us every month, but we know that the dogs and puppies we send on the Rescue Waggin’ vehicle will have the second chance they deserve to find new homes.” says Amber Kelley, Shelter Manager, The Franklin County Humane Society (Animal Harbor). “Saving the lives of 500 additional dogs through the Rescue Waggin’ program is a huge achievement for us.”

The Rescue Waggin' Program operates in the East Coast, Midwest, Great Plains, and South Central states. More than 57,000 dogs and puppies have been saved through the Rescue Waggin' program since it began in 2004.
The PetSmart Charities’ Rescue Waggin’ program is funded by donations. Members of the public can support the program by making a donation online, by email at or via phone at 623-587-2826, to help more pets like these find the loving homes they deserve.
